Tamil Chat Room: Talk in Tamil or Tanglish, Free

FlashChat has a free Tamil chat room where you can talk in Tamil or Tanglish with other Tamil speakers, straight from your browser and with no signup. One tap on the button below opens the room with a random username.

Vanakkam: what the room is like

The room is for anyone who thinks in Tamil: people in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy, Tamils working in Bengaluru or Hyderabad, and people abroad who miss talking in their own language. You do not have to write pure Tamil. Plenty of people only read Tamil script slowly and type Tanglish, and that is fine.

Things people bring up

  • Kollywood. First-day-first-show reviews, which star's film is coming next, and arguments about old classics versus new releases.
  • Music. Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, Anirudh, the song stuck in your head, and the playlists people actually play on a long bus ride.
  • Cricket. India matches and IPL season, where Chennai Super Kings talk takes over whether you support them or not.
  • Food. Filter coffee, idli versus dosa, biryani from Ambur or Dindigul, and what your amma cooks for Pongal.
  • Festivals and home. Pongal, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, going back to the native place, and rain in Chennai.

Typing in Tamil script or Tanglish

Tanglish is Tamil typed in English letters, like "enna panra?" for "what are you doing?". It is how most people text, and the room is used to it. If you want Tamil script, add the Tamil keyboard in Gboard (Settings, Languages, Add keyboard, Tamil). It has a transliteration mode: type vanakkam in English letters and it offers வணக்கம். Gboard also has a handwriting option if you prefer to draw letters.

On a computer, Google Input Tools in Chrome or the built-in Windows and macOS Tamil keyboards work the same way.

Openers that get a reply

TamilTanglishMeaning
வணக்கம்!Vanakkam!Hello
எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?Eppadi irukkeenga?How are you?
எந்த ஊரு?Endha ooru?Which town are you from?
சாப்டீங்களா?Saapteengala?Have you eaten? (a friendly hello)

"Endha ooru?" is a good one: everyone has an answer, and it usually leads to food or films from that place.

How the room works

  1. Open the room with the button on this page. It works in Chrome, Safari or any modern browser on a phone or computer.
  2. You get a random name on your first visit. No email, phone number or password.
  3. Say you are 18 or older and you are in. The room holds up to 1,000 people.
  4. Chat with everyone: type, reply to a message, react, or share a photo or GIF.

Room rules

  • Words: disallowed words are starred out automatically. Your message still goes through.
  • Pace: if you send too fast you are slowed down for a moment, which keeps flooding out.
  • Links: links outside an allow-list are removed.
  • Photos: each one is checked on the server, including against known child-abuse images, and again in the receiving browser. Illegal content is refused.
  • People: report or block anyone from the chat.
Good to know

Room messages stay in the room's history. One-to-one stranger chats are not written to disk unless reported, but a room is public, so keep phone numbers and addresses out of it. The room can be quiet at some hours; evenings IST are usually busier.
