Malayalam Chat Room: Chat in Malayalam or Manglish
FlashChat has a free Malayalam chat room for people who want to talk in Malayalam or Manglish, with no signup and nothing to download. Tap the button and the room opens in your browser with a random username.
For Malayalis at home and away
A lot of Malayalam speakers live outside Kerala, in the Gulf, in Bengaluru and Chennai, in Europe and beyond. The room is for them as much as for people in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode or Thrissur: a place to switch back to Malayalam for a while. People who picked up Malayalam from friends or a partner are welcome too.
Football, films and the rest
This is the one language room where football can beat cricket. Kerala Blasters matches, the ISL, sevens football in Malappuram, and of course the big European leagues and the World Cup all get airtime. Cricket shows up during India matches as well.
Mollywood is the other big topic. Malayalam cinema has a reputation for strong scripts, and people in the room like to recommend films, argue about endings and share songs. Beyond that:
- Food: sadya on a banana leaf, appam and stew, Thalassery biryani, puttu and kadala, and tea-shop snacks.
- Festivals: Onam with its pookalam and boat races, Vishu and the vishukkani, Christmas and Eid.
- Music: film songs old and new, and independent Malayalam bands.
- Life abroad: work in the Gulf, studying overseas, the flight home, and missing the rain.
Manglish is normal here
Manglish is Malayalam typed in English letters, like "enthaa vishesham?" ("what's new?"). Most of the room types this way. To write in Malayalam script, add the Malayalam keyboard in Gboard and pick transliteration: type namaskaram and it gives you നമസ്കാരം. There is also a native letter layout and handwriting input. On a computer, use Google Input Tools in Chrome or the Malayalam keyboard in your operating system.
Openers
| Malayalam | Manglish | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| നമസ്കാരം | Namaskaram | Hello |
| സുഖമാണോ? | Sukhamano? | Are you well? |
| എന്താ വിശേഷം? | Enthaa vishesham? | What's new? |
| ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചോ? | Bhakshanam kazhicho? | Have you eaten? |
Asking for a film recommendation is a reliable way to get a thread going.

Rules that apply automatically
Disallowed words are starred out, fast senders are slowed down, and links not on an allow-list are removed. Illegal content is refused. Photos are checked on FlashChat's server, including against known child-abuse images, and again in the receiving browser. You can report or block anyone from the chat.
Room messages are kept as the room's history, so keep personal details out (one-to-one stranger chats, by contrast, are not written to disk unless reported). With members spread across time zones, the room can still be quiet at times; evenings IST are usually the best bet.

Open the Malayalam room
Drop a namaskaram, ask who is watching the next Blasters match, or ask for a film to watch tonight. If the room is slow, the one-to-one chat pairs you with a stranger.
