Kannada Chat Room: Free Chat in Kannada
FlashChat’s Kannada room is a free public chat room where you can talk in Kannada, in script or Kanglish, with no signup and no download. The button below opens it in your browser with a random username.
A room where Kannada comes first
In Bengaluru it is easy to go a whole day speaking only English and Hindi. This room is the opposite: a place where Kannada is the default. It is for people in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Bengaluru, Kannadigas who have moved away, and newcomers to Karnataka who want to practise. If you are learning, say so; people tend to help.
Say hello in Kannada
| Kannada | Kanglish | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ | Namaskara | Hello |
| ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ? | Hegiddira? | How are you? |
| ಊಟ ಆಯ್ತಾ? | Oota aytha? | Had your meal? |
| ಯಾವ ಊರು? | Yaava ooru? | Which town are you from? |
"Oota aytha?" works as a greeting at almost any hour, and it is a natural way into a food conversation.
What gets talked about
- Sandalwood. New Kannada films, the ones that broke out across India, and the older classics people grew up with.
- Music and theatre. Film songs, bhavageethe, Yakshagana from the coast, and live gigs in Bengaluru.
- Cricket. India matches and the IPL, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru supporters rarely stay quiet.
- Food. Bisi bele bath, masala dose, Mysore pak, and the Udupi hotel near your house.
- Festivals. Ugadi, Mysuru Dasara, Deepavali and Rajyotsava in November.
- Bengaluru life. Traffic, rain, rent, and office stories.
Typing Kannada script or Kanglish
Kanglish (Kannada in English letters, like "enu madtidiya?" for "what are you doing?") is the quickest and most common way to type. For script, add Kannada in Gboard: the transliteration layout turns namaskara into ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ, and there is a native letter layout as well. Computers can use Google Input Tools in Chrome or the Kannada keyboard built into Windows and macOS.
Joining takes three taps
- Open the room from this page. It runs in any modern browser on Android, iPhone or a computer.
- Accept your random name. FlashChat makes one on your first visit, so there is no signup form.
- Confirm you are 18 or older. The Kannada room opens and you can start typing. It holds up to 1,000 members.
If you plan to come back, add FlashChat to your home screen from the browser menu. It then opens like an app.
How the room stays usable
Public rooms have a few automatic rules. Disallowed words get starred out, people who send too quickly are slowed down, and links outside an allow-list are removed. Illegal content is refused everywhere on FlashChat. Each photo is checked on the server, which includes a check against known child-abuse images, then again in the receiving browser. You can report or block any person from the chat.
Room messages are kept as the room's history (unlike one-to-one stranger chats, which are not written to disk unless reported). Treat the room as public: no phone numbers, addresses or office names. And if the room is quiet when you arrive, evenings IST tend to be busier.
