An account versus a random username
Emerald Chat needs an email and password, or a Google or Facebook login, before you chat. Its privacy policy, last updated in August 2022, lists your IP address, browser, operating system and a device token among the data it collects, and its FAQ says chats are stored temporarily for safety and moderation.
FlashChat gives you a random username on your first visit. You can add a profile, verify an email and set a password later, but only if you want to keep FlashBuddies and chats across phones. One-to-one chats with strangers are held in server memory and dropped when they end unless reported; basic session details are kept to deal with abuse. Saved Chat between FlashBuddies is end-to-end encrypted, so the server holds only ciphertext.
Filters, karma and paid plans
Emerald Chat's free tier includes interest matching, text and video, and group channels; paid tiers add gender, country and language filters. Plans renew automatically and its terms say there are no refunds. The site does not show prices, so we list none. It also runs a karma system.
FlashChat has no filters to buy with money. Interest tags are free, and a 30-minute match pass bought with FlashCoins you earn free adds age-range, same-city and gender filters, mutual and based only on what people show on their profile. Without a pass it matches a FlashBuddy who invited you first, then someone sharing an interest tag, then anyone, and skips are instant with no wait between them. Because far fewer people are online than on the big global sites, you may wait. If nobody is free within the wait window, you may be connected with an AI chat companion. FlashBot is labelled; not every AI companion is. Messages between two people are never sent to any AI service.
Safety and age
Emerald Chat says it scans messages with AI in real time and runs "24/7 human moderation", and it is for adults only. In August 2023, a review by the UK-based Our Safer Schools reported that the age check was only a self-declaration and that its testers found highly sexual content.
FlashChat does not verify age either: it is 18+ by self-declaration, with no ID check. Photos in chat are checked on FlashChat's servers, including against a known-CSAM hash list, and again in the receiving browser; report and block buttons are everywhere. The safety page has the details.
The short version
If you want an Android app and paid filters, and do not mind creating an account, Emerald Chat offers both. If you would rather start without an account and pay no money, and can accept fewer people online, try FlashChat.
