A chat room is a named group space where several people talk at once, unlike random chat which pairs you with one stranger at a time. FlashChat has both. What is a chat room, and how is it different from random chat?
A chat room is a persistent, named space that several people share. You join it, you can see what everyone is saying, and the room keeps existing when you leave. Random chat is the opposite: one stranger, one conversation, gone when either side skips.
They suit different moods. Random chat is for meeting someone new with no commitment. A room is for a conversation you can come back to — a topic, a language, a group of people you have started to recognise. Most people who use anonymous chat regularly end up using both.
How FlashChat rooms work
There are two kinds, and the difference matters more than it first appears.
- Public rooms
- Listed and discoverable. Anyone can browse and join. Good for open topics and meeting people.
- Private rooms
- Hidden from all listings. People join with the room's invite link or its password, so the only people inside are the ones you shared it with.
- Size
- Up to 500 members in a public room (1,000 in the official language rooms), 50 in a private room.
- Identity
- You appear under your FlashChat name and avatar, which start out random. No email, no phone number, no sign-up.
- What you can send
- Text, images, voice notes, GIFs and stickers, and links. Messages can be replied to, reacted to, edited and deleted.

- Polls, scheduled weekly events with reminders, unread counts, and a preview of a public room before you join.
One device can run up to 5 public rooms and 10 private rooms at a time. That cap exists so a single person cannot flood the room list.
Group video calls — private rooms only
Rooms support group video and voice calls for up to 15 participants at once, using a mesh connection where each person connects directly to every other person rather than routing through a central server.
Group calls are deliberately disabled in public rooms. An open room that anyone can walk into is exactly the wrong place for a live camera feed — it invites recording of people who did not choose their audience. If you want a group call, make the room private and share its invite link with the people you actually want in it.
Why a cap? In a mesh call every participant sends their video to every other participant, so bandwidth grows with each person added. FlashChat lowers each video's quality as a call grows, which keeps fifteen people workable on a good connection; on mobile data, smaller calls hold up better. Larger calls need a media server, which is a different kind of product.
Moderation tools inside a room
A room without controls turns into a spam channel within a day. Every FlashChat room comes with the following, available to whoever created it and to anyone they promote:
- Roles — the creator can promote members to moderator. Moderators can act on members; nobody can act on someone at or above their own level.
- Room rules — a rules text shown to people in the room, so expectations are stated rather than assumed.
- Pinned message — one message held at the top for context or announcements.
- Slow mode — a per-message cooldown of up to 120 seconds, which is the single most effective tool against a flood.
- Bans and warnings — per-room, with a ban list the creator controls.
- NSFW flag — rooms carrying adult-leaning content must be marked, and marked rooms are gated rather than shown to everyone.
On top of that, the platform's own moderation runs in every public room: disallowed words are starred out and the message delivered, fast and repeated messages are slowed down, links outside an allow-list are removed, and illegal content is refused. Why creating a public room takes a little karma
Anyone can join a public room immediately. Creating one needs 5 karma and spends 1. Karma goes to accounts with a verified email: verifying gives you 25 straight away, and hearts and comments on your Flash Cards add more.
This is deliberate, and it is the honest reason: spam rooms are the number one failure mode of every free chat-room site. Requiring a verified email before you can list a room publicly costs a genuine user almost nothing and costs a spam operation the one thing it does not have — time and engagement per account. Private rooms have no such requirement, because a room nobody can find is not a spam vector.
How to join or create a room in under a minute
- Open flashchat.fun in any browser. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
- Go to the Rooms section and browse what is open, or open the invite link someone sent you.
- Start talking. Your FlashChat name is already set up for you.
- To make your own: choose public or private, name it, set a description and tags. A private room needs a password; share its invite link (or the password) with whoever you want inside.
The honest limits
Worth knowing before you rely on it:
- Room messages are not end-to-end encrypted. They pass through and are stored on the server so people who join later can read the recent history. If you want messaging the server genuinely cannot read, that is Saved Chat, which works between FlashBuddies rather than in a group.
- Anonymous does not mean unaccountable. Reports are reviewed, and abuse can get a device blocked from the platform, not just the room.
- A room is only as good as the people in it. Moderation tools help a room that is mostly fine. They cannot rescue a room that has been abandoned by whoever created it.
