Marathi Chat Room: Free Chat in Marathi

The FlashChat Marathi room is a free public chat room where you can talk in Marathi with no signup and no app. Tap below, and it opens in your browser with a random username so you can start right away.

Namaskar, and what to expect

The room is a group chat for Marathi speakers: people from Mumbai and Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Aurangabad and the villages in between, plus Marathi families settled elsewhere. Mumbai is a city where Hindi and English drown Marathi out in everyday life, so having a room where Marathi is the default is the point.

How to write Marathi here

Marathi uses Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, so any Hindi or Marathi keyboard works. In Gboard, add Marathi and use transliteration: type namaskar and pick नमस्कार. If you would rather not switch keyboards, Roman letters are fine, like "kay chalu aahe?", and most people in the room will read it without a second thought. On a laptop, Google Input Tools in Chrome or the Windows Marathi keyboard does the job.

What Marathi speakers talk about

  • Natak and cinema. Marathi theatre has a long tradition, and people still go to see plays in Pune and Dadar. Marathi films, serials and the actors who moved from stage to screen are regular topics.
  • Music. Bhavgeet, abhangs, lavani, natya sangeet, and new Marathi songs.
  • Ganeshotsav and festivals. Pandal plans, modak, dhol-tasha practice, Gudi Padwa, Diwali faral and Makar Sankranti tilgul.
  • Cricket. India matches and the IPL, with Mumbai Indians in the middle of most arguments.
  • Food. Vada pav, misal pav from Kolhapur or Pune, puran poli, and where to get the best one.
  • Forts and treks. Monsoon trips to the Sahyadri forts, Lonavala weekends and travel tips.

Steps to join

  1. Tap "Join the Marathi room". It opens in your browser on a phone or computer.
  2. Keep the name you are given. FlashChat picks a random username the first time, so nothing to sign up for.
  3. Confirm you are 18 or older. The room opens. It has space for up to 1,000 members.
  4. Start talking, reply to others, react, or share a photo or GIF.

Keeping the room safe

A public room needs basic rules, and these run on their own: disallowed words are starred out, anyone sending too fast is slowed down, and links that are not on an allow-list are removed. Illegal content is refused. Every photo is checked on the server, including against known child-abuse images, and again in the receiving browser. Report or block anyone straight from the chat.

Public by design

Room messages are kept as the room's history, while one-to-one stranger chats are not written to disk unless reported. Do not share your phone number or address in the room. Like any room, it can be quiet at some hours; evenings IST are usually livelier.

Namaskar mandali

Open the room and ask who is planning a fort trek this monsoon, or which natak is worth a ticket. If the room is quiet, start a one-to-one chat with a stranger instead.
