Random Text Chat with Strangers, No Camera Needed

FlashChat is a free random text chat: open the site, tap Start, and you are typing with a stranger in a few seconds, with no camera and no signup. Video and voice exist, but a call only starts when both people agree, so a text chat stays a text chat.

How random text chat works

  1. Open flashchat.fun. It runs in the browser on Android, iPhone and desktop. On your first visit you get a random username, so there is nothing to fill in. Add it to your home screen if you come back often.
  2. Add a few interests (optional). Matching tries a FlashBuddy who invited you first, then someone with a shared interest tag, then anyone who is free.
  3. Type. The chat opens with text only. You can also send GIFs, a photo that disappears after 3 to 10 seconds, or a voice note that plays once.
  4. Skip or stay. Skip moves you to a new stranger at any time. If the conversation is good, add them as a FlashBuddy and invite them back another day.

Why choose text over video

A camera changes who talks to you and what they talk about. Text keeps the first impression on what you say, not on your room, your face or your network speed. It also suits the places people actually chat from: a hostel bed, a bus, an office break, a house where everyone else is asleep.

  • No camera, no microphone. The site never asks for camera or mic permission unless you start or accept a call.
  • Light on data. Text uses almost nothing. A video call on FlashChat is capped at 480p, about 4 to 6 MB a minute, which adds up on a daily pack.
  • Calls only by agreement. Either side can ask for a voice-only or video call inside the chat. It starts only when the other person accepts, and declining ends nothing. See voice chat with strangers for how calls work.
  • Time to think. You can read a message twice before you answer, which helps if English is not your first language. Hinglish, Hindi and regional languages are all fine.

If you do want faces on screen, random video chat covers the same match flow with the camera on.

Openers that get a reply

A plain "hi" gets skipped more than anything else. Something specific gives the other person a thread to pull:

  • "Quick one: chai or coffee, and defend your answer."
  • "What did you do today that you would not post anywhere?"
  • "I'm stuck choosing a series to watch. Convince me in one line."
  • "Which city are you in, and what is the one food everyone outside it gets wrong?"
  • Pick a shared interest tag and start there: "You picked cricket too. Worst selection call this year?"

Ask open questions, answer the ones you get with a little more than one word, and skip without guilt when it is not working. For more on starting conversations, read talking to strangers in India.

Privacy and safety in a text chat

  • Messages are not stored. One-to-one messages are never written to disk unless the chat is reported. They live in server memory while the chat is open and are dropped when it ends.
  • Photos are checked. Every photo is checked on the server, including a check against known child-abuse images, and again in the receiving browser.
  • Illegal text is refused in every chat. One-to-one chats are paced so nobody can flood you, but ordinary words are not filtered; public rooms also star out disallowed words and remove links outside an allow-list.
  • Report and block are in every chat. A report goes to a person for review.

FlashChat is for adults 18 and over. Age is self-declared; there is no ID check, so keep your own guard up: do not share your full name, number, address, college or workplace, and treat anyone who rushes you onto another app as a warning sign. The safety page lists every protection in detail.

FAQ

Do I need a camera or microphone for text chat?

No. A text chat needs neither. The browser only asks for camera or microphone permission if you start a call or accept one.

Is random text chat on FlashChat free?

Yes. There is no signup, no subscription and nothing to pay for with money. You get a random username on your first visit and can start straight away.

Are my text messages saved?

One-to-one messages are never written to disk unless the chat is reported. They are kept in server memory only while the chat is open and dropped when it ends. Public rooms are different: they keep their message history.

Can I switch from text to a call later?

Yes. Either person can ask for a voice-only or video call from inside the chat. It starts only if the other person accepts.

Can I chat with someone who likes the same things?

Add interest tags before you start. Matching tries a FlashBuddy who invited you first, then someone with a shared tag, then anyone who is free.

Are all matches real people?

Most matches are other people. When nobody is free within the wait window, you may be connected with an AI chat companion instead. FlashBot is labelled as a bot; not every AI companion is labelled. If you only want people, the public rooms are where real users talk to each other in the open.
